As our project gains momentum, we're eager to invite others to create with us; however, we feel it is necessary for folks—particularly junior scholars—who would like to join the creation branch of Conference Creatures to weigh the benefits with the costs of labor, materials, and minimal professional gain.
In this section, we will outline relevant variables we've considered as we think about Conference Creatures' growth. As a project focused on feminist praxis, we feel it is necessary to acknowledge the ethical complexities that accompany expanding a material project.
One practical challenge of inviting others to contribute to Conference Creatures relates to the material and time costs of producing for our project. We are hesitant to place an expectation upon individuals, though we recognize that expectations are often what make any project feasible.
While crochet, as an activity, lends itself to intermittent progress, tolerates being picked up and put down, and allows "mistakes" to be easily remedied, each creature requires roughly an hour-and-a-half of activity.
For the most part, Conference Creatures has been made possible by generous donations and fortuitous yarn purges.
While anyone could create for Conference Creatures, it's unclear whether the time and material investments would benefit the contributor because our names are more clearly attached to the project. As the original Conference Creature creators, we have access to the project's lore, contributor data, and the social media pages. Ultimately, because we receive the direct engagement and material upon which to publish, we feel it's important to acknowledge that Conference Creatures is likely to benefit Hannah and Olivia disproportionately to other contributors.
Regardless, we would love for others to get involved by becoming Conference Creature creators! If you'd like to create with us, email us at conference.creatures1@gmail.com
