The multiracial character of the American people
is also presented in the State Department's web page about Faces
of Islam, in which the racial diversity of both Islam and America is
displayed. It is perhaps worthy of note that many of these images come from corporate image banks and
may represent ethnographic representations designed for advertising or
promotional purposes.
The head shots on the State Department's site largely show Muslim U.S. residents
in the context of educational activities. In other places on the
site, Islamic scholars support the U.S. position on September 11 terrorism,
so this emphasis on activities of scholarship from primary school to university
furthers an implicit argument as well.
Significantly, women's faces are also uncovered
in all but one of the photographs on the State Department site, so that
information about gender norms in the United States is also disseminated. |
