Race plays a powerful role in the rhetoric of
September 11th. In the leaflets dropped by U.S. Armed Forces in Afghanistan,
the visual motif of the lighter hand grasping the darker hand is repeated
over and over again. In this case this leaflet shows a "typical"
American family of Anglo-Saxon descent. Three of the four family
members wear white, and the male members of the family wear clothes that
are reminiscent of tennis whites.
Students in the seminar howled with laughter when
they saw this picture. This kind of family is hardly "typical" in
Southern California, and Asian students play a significant role in
the campus life of U.C. Irvine, where over sixty percent of students come
from homes in which a language other than English is spoken. |
