What WebWhacker Does

WebWhacker is an on-line downloading and off-line browsing tool from Blue Squirrel. In a way, the software combines a sophisticated bookmark manager with browser cache, but rather than simply saving the URL of a favorite web site, WebWhacker additionally downloads the entire site--the html pages, images, and other objects--to a proprietary database on your desktop computer. This WebWhacker database is much more than browser cache, however, in that the software rewrites the links to point to the page components now saved to your computer. In other words, WebWhacker creates a mirror image of the site, which you can later browse at your leisure, even if you're not connected to the Internet. You can whack as many sites as you like (the limitation is storage space) and you can organize these sites just like bookmarks. Theoretically, if you had storage enough and time, you could whack the whole web; afterwards, perhaps late in the next millennium, your clone could browse it. But since we lack storage enough and time, here are three other reasons for using (or not using) WebWhacker:

  1. Speed Gains
  2. Presentations
  3. Control
