Sexiolence

WebWhacker, the on-line downloading and off-line browsing software from Blue Squirrel, is a nifty technological tool. Yet it is more a tool made possible by technology than a tool for substantial, productive work. It is really hard to imagine that we would want to download substantial sites. None of us wants to control access. Perhaps, however, WebWhacker would be useful for presentations. If we do chose to use WebWhacker, for whatever reason, we should do so with an awareness of the "sexiolent" nature of the software. First, it continues the sexual terminology that transforms computers and networking technology into objects of desire; and second, the software, because it removes web sites or pages of web sites from a larger context, distorts the World Wide Web.
