Multiculturalism in national life is an important
theme for the presentation of the American public landscape as well.
For example, the scenes of "Muslim Life in America" on the State Department
website present mosques
as part of our national architecture.
Given this American creed of muticulturalism,
however, anxiety about the amorphousness of our national identity can also
be exploited. Visual gags about "If the Taliban Wins" were widely
distributed via e-mail, which featured the manufactured
presence of Islamic visual culture in the landmarks and official icons
of the United States.
(The topic of humor
in the rhetoric of September 11th was explored by student Martin Vega in
his web page for the seminar.) |
