The Guide to Being Susie Queue

by Ellen Birdwell

We became convinced we needed a guide to “Being Susie” when one of our less technologically savvy tutors sat down to answer a chat question. He took twenty minutes to craft a formal response to a student’s quick question. The student, of course, had already disappeared after a minute of silence.

The guide gives everyone pointers and examples to follow when they write as Susie. It includes a great deal of the work that went into defining Susie, so that everyone is working from the same template. The guide includes sample chats that showcase Susie’s frequent use of cheerful, reassuring emoticons, something that many academic writers are uncomfortable with.
