Third and Final Frontier of Space In attempt to end this sermon I want to talk about what an intelligent e-pedagogy is in theory and in practice. For me this pedagogy partakes of Maria Montessori and John Dewey, as well as those like Cornel West who have reworked Dewey into something for the 21st century. I find myself particularly drawn to Montessori's vision of student-centered (she would say child-centered) teaching--where even the physical artifacts in the room, like desks, are fitted to the students, not the other way around. Of course, this is a pedagogy long espoused by luminaries in the field of computers and writing like Hugh Burns, Cynthia Selfe, Gail Hawisher, and others too numerous to mention. To this I would add that an intelligent e-pedagogy is based in Howard Gardner's theories of multiple intelligences, and it is because of this, to use Ong, that we need to allow for as many moments and modes of secondary orality to happen--using the teaching tools provided by both cyberspace and physical space. However, as nice as this all is, it doesn't really show you what I'm talking about, so let me try to do that preacher-style. |
