Using
a rich mixture of new media and a CHAT-based remediation of rhetorical activity (with particular indebtedness here to Anne Wysocki), FYW courses should incorporate a definition of new media writing that includes the
opportunity for innovation without limiting compositional
choices to those found in digital spaces. This brings me to item one:

FYW must attend to the materiality
of texts. It is important to offer students the
opportunity to make
knowledgeable choices about software, hardware, structural
organization, and to examine the rhetorical potentials of different visual,
aural, and alphabetical compositions. It is also important for
students to understand relationships between experimental compositions and those which can be identified as appropriate to various academic disciplines.
