A particular challenge that faced the interpreters was the level of peer interaction that characterizes workshop-intensive classes. Often, students would be engaging in extended discussion for the balance of class time. Trained for translating a lecture by a single speaker in a proscenium environment, the multi-vocal student-centered classroom presented a challenge for even the most talented sign language interpreter. Add to this the challenge of multiple idioms of non-native English, ranging from urban African-American vernacular to Mexican-American dialect, to the southwestern drawl that characterizes the region, and any sign-language interpreter would be overwhelmed. Yet it seemed counterproductive to abandon effective pedagogy because of such problems.
