The
interactive networked gaming technologies from Japanese
cyber cafes and cell phone services have an open and
easily accessible structure that places much of the
narrative remediation and reformation process directly
into the controlling hands of the user.
For example, through a variety
of commercial services, Japanese users can select the
use of interactive characters that arise out of Western
narratives (Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, the Clint Eastwood
manifestation of Dirty Harry, a zombie from
Night of the Living Dead, a character from
animated series of The AniMatrix), place their
chosen characters in “themed” Japanese worlds
that often were first imagined in manga books or anime
films but now exist as full-scale online environments,
and then dictate how they are going to interact with
their chosen characters and environments through the
use of hybrid cell phones or other various handheld,
wireless devices.
