Duangchay muttered something under his breath and left the room. For about five minutes. Then he intruded again, this time electronically, when the printer started to churn out page after page of what I thought was garbage code (the “garbage code” turned out to be a project he was preparing for a graduate chemistry class). It was then that I learned Duangchay’s name, since all print jobs at Purdue are accompanied by a sheet identifying their owner, the date, and the time. Although this was not my first experience with an “interloper,” this was the first time I knew the identity of an unenrolled student who interrupted my class. So I called our computing center and asked them to clear out Duangchay’s considerable print job. I also called the Dean of Students and told him about our encounter. This phone call eventually led to Duangchay writing me a letter of apology.
