But books are also the “people” of Myst.

A player never sees a person moving about in Myst. Instead, she learns that the conflict between father and sons has resulted in their being ‘trapped’ in books — trapped because they are incomplete, because the books that contain them are missing pages. A player’s challenge is to move through the game to find the missing pages and return them to their books.

Notice how these books (like the one shown above) are not “word” books but contain video clips. (Move your mouse over the screenshot to see a still image of what the video looks like.) Books are used here because — we have learned through both experience and the discourses around us — they visually indicate that what is contained between their covers belongs held together, even if, as in this game, what is held between the covers of the book is something very different from mechanically printed pages.
