Description

In first year composition, I use The Matrix as the basis for an essay. I chose this particular movie not only because I enjoy it, but because it offers fertile ground for discussion of everything from audience & purpose to myriad "issues" that we like students to engage with. Most students have seen the film--usually several times--and this gives the assignment even more depth.

By far, this assignment results in the best writing, and thinking, that my students do. No matter which topic they write on, the results are outstanding.
