To assure our place as a legitimate
academic field we need to create assessment models that measure the
skills we value and teach.
At the
2001 Computers and Writing conference in Muncie, Gail Hawisher noted
that C&W did not emerge as an academic discipline until we were able to
sustain a vigorous critique of our work. 8 Prior to the emergence of that critique, C&W may have
been a movement, but it was not legitimated as a field. To further our institutional legitimation, we must turn our
attention to the issue of institutional
assessment. We must be able to demonstrate the effectiveness of our
pedagogies.
