Computers and Writing 2000 announces the first Graduate Research Network at CW2K, a forum for graduate students to present research projects and work in progress dealing with Computers and Writing and to discuss their work with experienced researchers, editors, and peers.  The idea for this forum grew out of CCCC's successful Research Network Forum, founded in 1987 by Charles Bazerman et al.  However, the CW2K Graduate Research Network is uniquely our own.  We will focus on the work of graduate students; instead of plenary speakers, researchers will present their own works-in-progress; and roundtable discussions will group those with similar research interests with discussion leaders who will facilitate discussion and offer suggestions for developing research projects and for finding suitable venues for publication.  We encourage anyone interested or involved in graduate education and scholarship--students, professors, mentors, and interested others--to participate in this important event.

Research in the humanities does not always fit into easy-to-pigeonhole models.  We welcome those pursuing a wide variety of research models (qualitative studies, quantitative studies, textual/hypertextual/intertextual studies, traditional or electronic theses/dissertation projects, etc.) at any stage, from those just beginning to design a project to those whose projects are ready to pursue publication.  All work-in-progress presenters and discussion leaders will be listed in the CW2K program, and abstracts of works-in-progress will be published online as well as in a book of CW2K Conference presentation abstracts.  Selected abstracts and commentary will also be featured in Issue 5.2 of the online journal, Kairos: A Journal for Teachers of Writing in Webbed Writing Environments.

Submissions: Send brief (200-300 word) abstracts, in hard copy and on 3.5-inch IBM-formatted diskette, to:

Janice R. Walker
Coordinator, CW2K Graduate Research Network
Dept. of Writing and Linguistics
Georgia Southern University
P.O. Box 8026
Statesboro, GA  30460

Submissions may also be sent by email to: jwalker@gasou.edu.  All electronic files must be in IBM-readable format, please.

All submissions must include the following information:

If you will need any equipment to present your project or work-in-progress (LCD projectors, network connections, pc, overhead projectors, etc.), please specify.  (Note: We cannot guarantee availability of equipment, but we will try to make available what we can.)  Please bring printouts or handouts, as appropriate, with your name, university affiliation, and contact information, an abstract of your project, and any research questions you may have, to share with 12-15 people since we cannot guarantee the availability of technical resources.  You may also bring along a laptop with locally-saved files if you prefer.

Deadline for Submissions has been extended! New Deadline:  March 15, 2000

Note:  If you cannot make the March 15 deadline, you can still participate in the Graduate Research Network.   Names and abstracts of submissions received after this date will not be included in the CW2K Conference program; however, submissions received by May 1, 2000 may still be considered for publication in Kairos.  Contact jwalker@gasou.edu for more information.

Discussion Leaders:  We are seeking experienced researchers, mentors, editors, and others willing to volunteer to serve as Discussion Leaders for the Graduate Research Network at CW2K.  Discussion leaders may also choose to contribute commentary to a special feature on the CW2K Graduate Research Network to be published in Issue 5.2 of Kairos.  If you are interested in being a part of this exciting project, send your name, institutional affiliation, area or areas of interest/expertise, editorial affiliation if applicable, mailing address, and email address in the body of your email message to:  John Barber at jfbarber@eaze.net by March 15, 2000.  We also hope you will encourage your graduate students to be part of this special event.

Note:  We will have a table available for publishers and editors to promote their wares.  Bring sample copies, flyers, subscription information, or other handouts to distribute.  If you cannot make the March 15 deadline, you can still participate in the Graduate Research Network.   Names received after the deadline will not be included in the CW2K Conference program, however.  Contact jwalker@gasou.edu for more information.

CW2K Online:  Even if you will not be attending CW2K in person, you can attend CW2K Online beginning in March.  For more information on CW2K Online, visit the CW2K Online Conference Web site.  CW2K Online will be featuring some sessions of special interest to graduate students, including a special Town Hall #3 forum, from May 3-24, chaired by Michael Day, Sharon Cogdill, Kathy Fitch, Becky Rickly, and Jacqui Cyrus, part of a two-part electronic discussion featuring guests and topics from CW2K Town Hall 1 and 2 which take place in Fort Worth.

Registration Information: The Graduate Research Network is free to all registered conference participants. Reduced Conference fee of $100 for graduate students includes participation in the Graduate Research Network and all regular Conference presentations, meals, and special events covered by the full registration fee, or there is a $75 registration fee for participation in the CW2K Graduate Research Network only.  For more information, see the Registration Form at http://www.eaze.net/~jfbarber/cw2k/conf-registration.html.  See also the information on the Town Hall Sessions in Fort Worth and online along with special strands throughout the conference focusing on the needs of Graduate students.
