The Sharing Cultures Project occurs within myriad institutional, pedagogical, and social contexts. The sections below craft a brief snapshot of the environment in which we created and maintain the Sharing Cultures Project program.

Institutions

Columbia College Chicago (CCC) is an undergraduate and graduate college in downtown Chicago whose principal commitment is to provide a comprehensive educational opportunity in the arts, communications and public information, within a context of enlightened liberal education.

Support

The Sharing Cultures Project began with funding from an Alumni Initiative Award from the Fulbright Foundation received by Sharon Silverman, who spent 1999 as a Fulbright Scholar at University of Port Elizabeth (now Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University), Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Sharon initiated with project with David Krause, Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence at Columbia College Chicago and faculty members at both institutions.

The Sharing Cultures Project has continued to develop and thrive with enthusiastic support from Cheryl Johnson Odim, Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Columbia College Chicago, David Krause, Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence at Columbia College Chicago, Nthabiseng Ogude, Deputy Vice Chancellor at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, and Nico Jooste, Director of the International Office at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

Classes

At present, the Sharing Cultures Project is taught in Introduction to College Writing for students at Columbia College Chicago and in Academic and Life Skills and Language for Academic Purposes at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

We're currently considering adding more courses to the program from both sides.
