Do we Really Want to Invest our Time into OWLs?

Our investment in OWLs raises some serious questions. If we are going to invest significant resources into such projects, we need to know the extent to which an OWL might

• encourage practices that walk-in writing centers have tried to discourage

• provide the low-risk spaces that we've tried to create in walk-in centers

• mask important non-verbal cues

• leave some students out

• give administrators a reason shut down walk-in centers
