crossroadsAnd so cochlear implants are a potential life altering site for hearing impaired individuals. At around 17 years of age, a hearing impaired person can have cochlear surgery done and can experience one of three things. First, their hearing can be improved to near "normal" levels, allowing them to enter dominant hearing culture more fully. They can have their hearing stay much the same, in which case they continue to see themselves between Deaf and Audist culture, or they can lose some hearing (or have their hearing remain the same) and begin developing more affinity with whatever they perceive as deaf culture.
