hearing pedagogy

sound of writing

I realized that so much of the teaching that I do asked students to listen to the sounds of words, to hear where the sentences didn't sound right. Stealing a few scraps of information from descriptive linguistics, I asked my students to play the part of the linguist and to transliterate their own speech onto the page. Listen for the cues. Hear the pauses. Feel the breath. A native speaker of sign language, John was suffering from a rift of knowledge separating us.
