city on the hill

Each informant/collaborator has their own representation of Gallaudet but certain characteristics remain constant. It is a far off place. It is a "whole" society - what I mean by this is that the mythical representations of Gallaudet represent its culture as self-aware and smoothly unbroken. Like other utopias, there is no disturbance or unease or unhappiness in this magical land. There are no encroachments from hearing culture in this land of Gallaudet; Gallaudet seems to have sprung, fully formed, on the suburban campus outside Washington DC where it now sits.
