Due to some technical difficulties I arrive a little late and the conversation was in full swing. That, coupled with the fact that I am not part of the "academic composition" community nor a part of the class that joined the discussion, left me totally outside that temporary discourse community. I tried to be "serious" and academic, but got very little response. It was only when I said something terribly silly -- something along the lines of we were like herding butterflies -- that I got a response from several people. So unlike Mike, feeling like others were looking in on the conversation, I felt like the person on the outside jumping up and down, trying to see over everyone's shoulders.
