Commlink: Notes from the Communications Editors

Your communications editors, Tony Atkins and Erin Karper, have been with Kairos for five years, and we’ve seen many changes to Kairos, although its commitment to quality scholarship on rhetoric, technology, and pedagogy remains unchanged.  We have added new positions, hired additional editors, and created new sections of the journal based on suggestions from readers, staff members and editorial board members.  Our readership and visibility in the field continues to increase, and we would like to thank our readers for being an integral part of Kairos

This will be our final CommLink column. As part of the changes described in the Logging On section, we will unveil a new look and feel for Kairos in Spring 2007 as we abandon what Cheryl Ball has described as “old red faithful” for a fetching new front end design by Karl Stolley (of Purdue OWL fame) and a spiffy new back end powered by Drupal. Moving to content management software will allow us to more easily organize and present information to our readers, and allow us to provide news, information, and promotional opportunities in new and exciting ways. We will also be able to include more interactive elements so that readers may customize their Kairos experience. Look for news and commentary from your friendly Communications Editors in a different form in next spring’s edition!

Chances to Meet Kairos Staff

Look for Kairos staff at the following places in 2007…

We hope to see you there!

Promotion of Kairos

Over the last five years, we have learned that we depend on readers, staff, and editorial board members for publicity, whether that is through the citation of articles and authors, the lively discussions at Kairosnews, or the distribution of flyers and brochures at conferences. We would like to continue that kind of publicity by making all of our publicity materials available on the web for anyone to download and distribute. We want you, our readers, to feel comfortable accessing, printing, and distributing our flyers and additional publicity materials.  In future issues, look for the link that takes you to our publicity distribution center to download the latest materials.

We, as communication editors, also want to continue the process of getting our journal recognized by top bibliographies in the fields of rhetoric/composition computers and composition and professional writing.  If you know of bibliographies or other scholarly resources in which Kairos should be featured, please let us know. We also encourage our readers to link to Kairos on your course web pages, personal/professional web sites, and even department web sites when possible.

Finally, we want to welcome Cheryl Ball and Beth Hewett as new editors of the journal, and thank Doug Eyman and James Inman, our Senior Editors, for their continued devotion and support. It’s been a great five years, and we look forward to the exciting future of Kairos as we celebrate its tenth anniversary!
