Personal Home Pages and Hegemony

In the end, I eventually bring students back to our three types of sites and ask them about the privately managed home pages which contain materials very similar to the network pages (though usually the private sites were not as glossed up). Some issues we discuss are:

What my students and I discover, in a rather exquisite form, are the immediate effects and evidence of cultural hegemony at work. The privately managed pages reinscribe and promote shows as much, if not more than, the advertisers and corporate networks themselves. These privately managed sites display little re-interpretation of the cultural artifacts of television shows; rather, they simply use the virtual medium to reproduce what they have consumed-- no negotiation necessary.
