How to Get to

The John Burroughs Nature Sanctuary

It's located in West Park, NY, off the Hudson River, half way between New York City and Albany. There, Slabsides, Burroughs' rustic cabin still stands on a lovely, 220-acre preserve, which is open to the public throughout the year. The cabin itself is unlocked and attended on the third saturday in May and the first saturday in October.

There are several hiking trails and a beautiful lake on the property-- well worth the trip. Visitors can peer through the windows and see its furnishings much as Burroughs left them.

From the New York State Thruway, take exit 18 (New Paltz) and head east on Route 299 until it ends at 9W. Turn left (north) for several miles. When the road goes from four-lane divided to two-lane undivided blacktop, you'll start seeing signs for Esopus, West Park, the West Park Winery, and the West Park School District. When you see Marcel's restaurant on the left, slow down immediately for a left hand turn onto Floyd Ackert Road (between the restaurant and the post office). In a few hundred yards, go over (not along side of) the railroad tracks. In less than a mile you'll see a road sign for Burroughs Drive. About a half-mile up that winding road, there is a cyclone fence gate. Park, and walk one-quarter mile to Slabsides. A fairly level easy dirt road. Don't forget to sign the guest book!

You can hike a trail to Sanctuary Pond, or drive back to Floyd Ackert Road, turning left a short distance until you see another cyclone fence. Park and walk a quarter mile to the pond. At the end of the road is the Preserve's Administration Building (unattended).

From the east side of the Hudson, cross the Mid-Hudson Bridge at Poughkeepsie, take the first exit off the bridge onto 9W north. Follow the above instructions once you get to West Park. Slabsides was built in the winter of 1894-1895, and this year marks its Centennial. The cabin will be the center of a celebration the first weekend in October, 1995.
