How to make a MEmorial The wide image and the MEmorial share the mystory as the method of composition. Both explore the principle of the EmerAgency: Problems B Us. Both use the image logic of the obtuse or third meaning, Roland Barthes' punctum or sting, to map one's position within a social order. As a consultation on a public policy issue, a MEmorial begins with a monitoring of the news of the day (TV and newspapers) until encountering a story that stings, that evokes a feeling of some kind (injustice, exasperation, anger, fear, perplexity, shock, surprise...). The website then explores this feeling by working through the discourses of the popcycle, locating the points of identification between the egent and the disaster or policy issue. This structural portrait aligns scenes of trouble or problem across the discourses of Family, Entertainment, Community, with the policy issue occupying the place of community history. The effect of the MEMorial is that of a metaphor (parable, allegory): the documents of the policy problem figuratively evoke the feeling or atmosphere of the egent's personal situation.
One example of a student MEMorial is included here.
