The basic conflict in American values is that between individual achievement and nurturing of the group. Traditionally we have not wanted our achievers to be selfish, or our collectivity to be passive and dependent on heroes. The conflict conventionally is resolved through a narrativization that genders masculine the individualist pole and feminine the nurturing pole.
