Operation
and Funding
KHM: Can
you talk about the Multiliteracy Center in its current operation and how
you got the initial funding to create it at the University of Michigan?
DS:
The Multiliteracy Center right now is a relatively small operation for
the University of Michigan. We we have about 125 to 150 sessions per semester,
which is not some huge number. It is certainly much smaller than our traditional
peer tutor program and is a smaller number than other similar support
units on campus. Nevertheless, having said that, it felt like a huge endeavor
to me, as one of the people who was intensely involved with trying to
get this off the ground.
Among the whole spectrum of things that we had to deal with was that we
had to get the initial funding. We got the start-up money through an internal
grant, which came from money that was set aside based on a fee that is
charged to students which is earmarked for technology at the University.
