I am not arguing, however, that we are passively shaped by hypertext or by any technology. Rather, according to the principle of the cybernetic feedback loop, we change our technologies while being changed by them. A technology such as hypertext cannot simply be used as a tool; users engage in a mutually transformative relationship with this technology. Hence, rather than constructing hypertext as a personally empowering technology, it would be more congruent with feminism to articulate hypertext as a relational technology.
