Unlike
much of traditional classroom writing, which
assumes an artificial audience designated by assignment requirements or which is
addressed to the instructor (whose expectations as a reader are often
imperfectly understood), writing in electronic environments develops students' awareness of a
real audience. Email messages and synchronous chat, and bulletin board messages address
individuals by name (or alias) or all readers subscribing to the forum.
