Intervention One: Encourage Broader Understandings of Nursing History Early in Programs.

Many nurse educators believe it is important to expose students to the history of nursing so they can appreciate the many people who have helped to define nursing as a field and profession over the years. Our research suggests that this practice should be prominent early in students' programs of study: retention. Since some students who have encountered images of nursing in popular culture do not have realistic impressions of the profession, bringing history into the mix early can provide valuable information for them, helping them think maturely about the life choices they are making. In addition to providing role models in nursing, a knowledge of the challenges nurses have overcome through the years can motivate them to stay the curricular course and to remain energized and excited about nursing through core curriculum classes.
