Signs of Specific Developmental Disorders

A helpful guideline for determining if a student struggles with specific developmental disorders is to evaluate the student based on these questions.  If a student exhibits several of these tendencies, and there is no other, valid explanation, the student might have an SLD.  These questions are phrased from the educator’s perspective and grouped according to similar difficulties.  They also suggest possible specific developmental disorders that account for these difficulties.

Specific Developmental Disorders and Possible Symptoms

Why can't they keep up with the rest of the class? Why are they so hesitant to participate in class?

A Lifetime of Frustration, Anxiety, and Tension

Why do they seem either rebellious, defensive, indifferent, or defeated?  When I ask them a question, why don't they quickly respond and look me in the eye?

A Hesitancy to Take Risks

Why do they write about boring topics?  Can't they take a risk and choose something exciting?
