Eight Levels of Electronic* Research Papers

Design-rich web essay w/sources	“True” Hypertext Primitive Linked	Multi-column, formatted pathmarked paper which might use frames, multimedia, show logos and/or conceptual maps
Multimedia		Same as pathmarked except that pictures, animation, sound and/or motion are added
Pathmarked		Marks paths for readers by highlighted specifically chosen words or phrases which are hotlinked to internal nodes/segments of text
Linked		Uses links embedded in the parenthetical references which jump to each entry within the Works Cited page
Linked		Uses links embedded in the parenthetical references which jump to the Works Cited page as a whole
Linked		Similar to previous type except that electronic sources are activated, working (i.e., external) links
primitive		Unbroken linear paper that is viewable on the web which uses some or all electronic sources (not linked)
primitive		Unbroken linear papers that are simply uploaded on the web (no electronic sources)

* My version of “electronic research paper” would be similar to Jennifer Bowie’s idea of “webtexts.” Her idea of hypertexts would fall into any of the top categories of the chart above.
