Sudol and Horning explain:
- [Myers] argues that we have moved from a notion of literacy centered on being able to sign one's name, to literacy focused on recording, to a literacy of recitations and reports, to a literacy of decoding, defining and analyzing, and finally, most currently, to critical literacy. The latter means going beyond literal comprehension of texts to interpretation and evaluation. (vi)
