Technical Difficulties and Chats

The following is another discussion between two students working on their first group projects.  This freshman-level coure had a number of students who demonstrated a basic proficience with internet usage and with computers in general, but who had not had much experience using chats, for example, or even submitting papers electronically.  As a result, a good deal of chat time was spent figuring out the mechanics of the program, which was often very slow to load.  Frequently when a student attempted to pull up a web page in the browser space provided with the chat room, that would crash the chat program entirely for students working at home on older, slow machines.  To compensate for problems like this, and for the general uncertainty that was a part of our couse until well into the semester, I frequently extended deadlines.
