An Administrator's ViewpointChristy DesmetThe analyses chronicled in Hypertext from a Distance belong to two teachers and one administrator who, in Spring 2000, were involved in an experimental composition class that linked three different campuses of the University System of Georgia. The contributors to this web site all teach at the University of Georgia. Angela Mitchell and Laura McGrath each taught a section of the course. I did not teach a section, but as the Director of Freshman English, was involved in writing the grant that funded the program, oversaw the technical needs of the course, and, together with the other teachers involved in the project, helped to orchestrate the syllabus and collaborative structure of the class. Laura McGrath, Angela Mitchell, and I also met each week, to discuss both the class and relevant books and articles that would help us theorize this unusual pedagogical experience. My observations come largely from these weekly interactions with Laura and Angela as the class progressed, reinforced by my observation of e-mail exchanges among the teachers and by the students' actual work. Hence, I have the perspective of both an insider and an outsider. Department of English,
