Fred Kemp writes:I despair of trying to create "group definitions." The group is, by definition, incapable of creating definitions. And this holds even more true of English department groups. The 'group' will eventually define itself by what it determines is demonstrably successful behavior, not by any collusion that requires imagination, courage, and innovation. It is the responsibility of leadership to present a working model of a successful management of formal learning, to go WAY out on a limb to do so in spite of plenty of challenges, and then suffer either the slings and arrows or the praise of the group. It it works, it works, and power to the person or persons who took the risk. Successful pedagogy should be apodeictic, demonstrable. Teachers should enjoy teaching with it and students should enjoy learning through it.
