We've been lucky enough to hire teachers who love students. As our online courses have expanded, we've asked the experienced teachers to mentor newbies. Mentors write the teachers' handbook, and they show the newbies how to use the technology, courseware, and administrators. Newbies get a week or two of practice with all that stuff, and then they rely on the mentor all through the first term.

Now, we hire experienced composition instructors. We don't exist to support graduate students, so our newbies come with, on average, several years' experience teaching writing in multiple courses. This allows mentors to show newbies the liberating possibilities of the tools.
