With any kind of technology training, it is important to know what computer hardware and software is available. Identify specific software applications and hardware that may be used in your workshop. There are three categories addressing hardware, software, and usage issues.There are questions in each of the following three areas that must be addressed when designing your workshop. Sample answers to questions are provided in italics.

I. Hardware
Where are the computers located at (e.g., electronic classroom, production lab)?
Electronic classroom 932N
How many computers and printers do you have available for users?
25 computers with 1 instructor station = 26 total / 2 printers
Do you have an LCD projector connected to a computer?
Yes!
Do you have CD-ROM players on the computers?
Will not need it for this workshop.
Do the computers have multimedia (e.g., speakers, earphones, video card) capabilities?
Yes. Speakers.

II. Software
What productivity applications (e.g., word processor, database, spreadsheet, presentation) are available?
Yes, MS Office
Is there Internet (WWW) access? If yes, what software is used?
Yes, Netscape
Is there e-mail access? If yes, what software is used?
Yes, VAX/UNIX
Is there access to the library on-line catalog? If yes, do you know how to access the necessary software?

III. Usage Issues
When are the computers available for faculty use? Student use?
Full-time faculty members have computers in their offices. Adjunct faculty have access to computers. Students can use the public lab on the 8th floor. The lab has the same software, if not more, than in the classroom.
When looking at available software make sure you look for the version you require.
File compatibility is important when you move from your computer to another one.
What are the departmental and school or university policies for computer facilities use?
Remind faculty that students need a valid student ID to use the lab on the 8th floor.
