- Identify and Develop Workshop Goals
It is important to develop clear and supported goals for your workshop. There are different components to address. Sample answers to questions are provided in italics.Stakeholders | Objectives | Goal Determination | Download Workshop Form
I. Involve Stakeholders
Develop goals for the technology workshop and seek agreement from all stakeholders. Goals will allow you to design activities and materials which provide participants the incentives to learn.
II. Behavioral Objectives
Use objectives as heuristics to guide design. Do not always insist on operational performance descriptions which may constrain the learners goals and achievement.
Pushing goal statements to behavioral specifications can often be wasted work. Goals and objectives should be specific enough to serve as inputs to the design of assessments and instructional strategies (Wilson, Teslow, & Osman-Jouchoux, 1995).

III. Goal Determination
The following are a series of questions that can assist you in developing clear and supported goals. Sample answers to questions are provided in italics.
Do you need to provide a pre-skills assessment to determine the proficiency level of all participants (e.g., trainer, faculty, administrators)?
Based on conversations with faculty, we should make this workshop low-end user friendly.
Do you focus on your departmental needs only or general computer use needs?
Department needs for teaching faculty to teach students how to use the internet for research papers, a primary course goal of English 1302.
Do you already have an Academic Computing dept. that can provide basic software and hardware literacy for first time users?
Yes, but times are later in the semester, can announce this at the workshop. We want to offer the workshop before so instructors can plan for the semester and reserve a computer classroom.
How much time have you been allocated to provide the workshop?
2 hours. Check with department chair.
Should you teach faculty how to use the software or teach how to integrate software into curriculum or both?
Integrate software into curriculum. Help faculty feel comfortable with showing students and then allowing students to use the Internet for research purposes. Show how this will help develop critical thinking skills.
Do you want to address related theory to teaching and technology use?
Bring in basic social constructionist theory regarding technology and composition studies.Back to top
