Argument seems dependent upon the logical relationships between the "pieces" within a discourse. By ignoring how the pieces are organized--that is, by remitting control of the sequence to the reader--the author has dismissed one of his primary duties or, if nothing else, he has lost what we had previously valued as a source of ethos.Consider this from Arrangement to ArgumentEthos could be developed in a logically, linearly, sequential discourse by the fact that the author could show the reader his intentions. If the reader can control the directions and the connections, then the ethical appeal gained by a sound, well-supported, traditional argument fades into the reader's inferences about an author based upon the number of options, the seeming fits between the nodes, and the glitz of the overall presentation. The reader takes over the sequencing that was the author's job: arrangement.
