*jcwhite* Angie and pat, I am wondering what you EXPECT when you read interviews--what are the basics that you get?

*Pat14* Interviews in a magazine, or what?

*Pat14* Newspaper?

*Pat14* TV?

*Jeff* Well, what do all those have in common?

*ednurse* (jcwhite)What do you mean the Basics?

*No1* Any kind of interviews, Pat. What makes a good interview?

*Pat14* They're a type of media.

*Jeff* I mean what, when someone says, "hey read this interview," do you think you will be reading--in general?

*ednurse* Interviews try to give information about something we may not know anything about.

*Angie* I like interviews that give a fair amount of details.

*Pat14* I think I will be reading an opinion.

*Pat14* Sometimes?

*Jeff* Pat, whose opinion?

*ednurse* Or an opinion about details.

*Angie* I think it's more like reading the interviewers impression of the person.

*Pat14* The opinion of the person being interviewed.

*aaurora* Type here and hit 'Enter' key to send.

*Pat14* here

*No1* Angie and Pat are giving two sides of the coin...

*Jeff* Angie do you agree with pat that it will be the opinion of the interviewee? or the interviewer?

*ednurse* Isn't an interview just the interviewers opinion?

*Angie* I feel it is how the interviewee wants to be perceived by the interviewer.

*Jeff* In other words, how does the interviewer effect the readers' perceptions of the interviewee?

*Pat14* The interviewer just repeats what the interviewee says and then gives his opinion on those things. Isn't it?

*Jeff* Ednurse, with no regard to the interviewee??

*ednurse* but isn't what is repeated only what the was heard, maybe not what was really meant?

*Angie* If he or she wants to play the person off as a jacka** or as a saint it is his slant he can put on it.

*Jeff* Ah, good point, ednurse.

*Jeff* Right, Angie.

*Jeff* At least, possibly right, right?

*Angie* sure

*Jeff* Pat, do you want an interview of Micheal Jordan to take his words and twist them around so that he is made to look like a jerk (assuming you like him).

*Jeff* As a reader.

*ednurse* How can we portray an unbiased interview

*Angie* can we? it is all in our perceptions of the personwe are writing about.

*Pat14* No, Mr. Jordan is a king in what he does. I don't think anybody would believe it anyway.

*No1* This thread is an important one for getting a grasp of this interview assignment. Interviews can be biased, or totally objective.  There can be just the Q&A approach, or the integrated essay style reporting on the interview with ideas developed by the interviewed using the subject's words. This second type is what we are trying for. The first two interviews at the end of Workshop 6 are good examples.

*ednurse* Oprah, sometimes does excellent interviews.

*Angie* I knew I shouldn't of mentioned Oprah.

*Pat14* Oprah is the queen of interviewers.

*No1* Great, Angie. You seem well prepared to carry out the interview.

*No1* What about David Frost?

*Jeff* Charlie Rose is the king of interviewers.

*ednurse* Oprah can be, but lately she doesn't let the interviewee get a word in edgewise.

*No1* How about Robin MacNeill?

*Jeff* But he's on Nerd Tv--PBS

*Jeff* i'm a nerd

*Angie* I'm a nerd, you beat me to it.

*ednurse* Most successful people are nerds!!!

*Pat14* we are all nerds in our own way.

*No1* Or, does success make them nerds?

*Jeff* But all those people are in control of the interviews--they are prepared with primary questions and with back-ups.

*aaurora* yes, most successfuul intellectuals are nerds, I agree.

*No1* Hold on...What is a nerd?

*Pat14* That is because "nerds" is the name Americans gave those people.

*ednurse* They have done their homework, does that make them nerds too?

*No1* Stand up for nerds!

*Angie* rent a movie once in a while (sarcasm)

*aaurora* No, being anerd makes them successful. I mean nerd in a admirable manner.

*Pat14* yes aaurora

*ednurse* true.

*No1* Here's a really nerd-like thing...let's look at this week's assignment! 1.Find a person to interview

*No1* 2.Get his or her permission to be interviewed twice, a time commitment of about two to three

*No1* hours at the most--and set up the interviews

*No1* 3.Using the suggestions on pp. 155-56, generate a list of potential questions

*No1* 4.(If possible) Practice the interview to develop your techniques

*No1* Those are the steps..is everyone ready to nerd-like tick them off?

*Jeff* Who is on NSCHAT? Everyone but Pat?

*Jeff* Sorry, No1--didn't mean to interrupt.

*ednurse* ready or not... we do have an assignment

*No1* Angie, are you on NSC?

*Angie* HUH?
