Even on the internet it is possible to be categorized. The notion that only minds exist on the WWWeb may make for good commercials, but it is not necessarily true. Consider, for example, the technology behind such services as Press Agent. These services are able to "learn" about you by tracking and analyzing your preferences. While this may allow you to focus on other matters, be them on-line or off-line, you have to wonder just how far such technology will go.
For example:
The registration for My Yahoo takes under a minute, but gives My Yahoo a great deal of information about who you are, such as your sex, age, home town, and interests. A disclaimer states "This information will only be used by Yahoo! and our content providers (like firefly) to provide you with personalized services, and we won't give it to anyone else (like advertisers)." However, can we be sure that others will be as ethical?
Think tracking your movements requires some fancy computer work? Think again.
