Bolter’s Writing Space talks about the non-linearity of computer writing in terms of a network. The connections, links, bridges, meanings, etc., still exist, but they happen in an altogether free and connected way. In Bolter’s words, “Each element in this network may be a word, a sentence, a paragraph, and it may be related to as many other elements as the author or the reader (who is also an author) cares to define.” Many theorists have implied that readers are also writers, but the multi-linearity and flexibility of computer texts makes this writerly progression necessary and obvious for readers. Understanding the virtual synthesis of reader and writer is an important progression in our hypertext paradigm.
