Timeline for Sakai Project
- Fall 2005. Instructional Development and Campus Computing solicit volunteers for an ad hoc task force on selecting a course management system. Jane and Karen join.
- 2005-2006. Instructional Development and Campus Computing sponsor a series of talks on educational technologies. They ask faculty and staff to research various open source CMSs such as Moodle, Inquiry Page, and Sakai. They also invite projects.
- February 2006. Karen and Jane write a grant proposal to Instructional Development entitled, "CMS Materials for Library Orientations: A Collaboration between the UCSB Libraries and the Writing Program."
- May 2006. Proposal receives funding ($9,169.70).
- Summer 2006. Steve Miley hired to be systems manager for both Moodle and Sakai.
- August 2006. Project starts. James, Alison, Cassie, and Vicki join the project. Members meet weekly; they begin to track "adopter-stoppers" (bugs that would prevent instructors from adopting the system) as well as value-added tools.
- December 2006. Course sites for Writing 2, Writing 50, and the Writing for Engineers sequence (Writing 1E, 2E, and 50E) are completed. Members begin turning attention to making the UCSB Libraries more accessible through a Sakai course site.
- January 2007. Sakai version 2.3 implemented. The campus continues discussions about whether to adopt Moodle or Sakai. The decision is made to continue supporting both systems through 2007-2008.
- February 2007. Karen and Jane submit the second grant proposal based on input from entire group. It is entitled, "Assessment of CMS Course and Library Orientation Sites: A Collaboration between the UCSB Libraries and the Writing Program."
- February 2007. ERes/Library integration tool is implemented by the end of February. Karen asks TAs in technical communication to comment on Sakai sites.
- May 2007. Second proposal funded ($19,671.47) to start August 2007. Vicki and Jane complete initial Camtasia videos on library instruction topics.
- April-June 2007. Cassie, Alison, and James try out Sakai sites in their Writing 2 and Writing 50E courses. Karen asks TAs in composition to comment on Sakai sites. Mary begins to work with Steve on writing instructional materials for Sakai and Moodle.
- July 2007. Steve, Jane, Karen, and Mary attend SakaiCal, a conference of institutions in Southern California that are working with Sakai. Steve is a conference organizer.
- August 2007. Sakai version 2.4 implemented.
