The Textfile as Landscape
Joyce begins this essay by uncovering the process by which our thoughts
and experiences become memory, or, as he points out, move from being in
time to recalling in space, which is subject to landscape, geography and
maps. His purpose in pointing out this crucial move is a political one.
His description of the thought process puts it at odds with the writing
process as played out with paper and pencil, or for that matter, even the
typewriter. This essay is a strong argument for the necessity for
electronic writing instruction, IMHO.
