It seems to be that desire for some kind of connection to the
"real," for some kind of
reality to the "true real," is the strongest in relation to the
self. Thus, students can
readily accept their socially constructed position vis a vis
identity groups such as race
and gender, and they can, at the same time, tenaciously hold onto
the idea that there
is a "true self" which is communicable to others.
