For the entire semester, you will be assigned to a group, or
"band" (after the whole garage band idea in which people switch
instruments, etc.). Your band will provide you with an intimate
group to help work through the problem(s) posed by this course.
Often, educational situations are set up in ways which impose
isolation on students. In this course, your band will provide
you with a space to think and work collectively. Critical
thinking is much less intimidating and in many cases more
fruitful when undertaken as a group process.
Each band will be responsible for four tasks:
- presenting
material on the readings/assignments ONCE during the semester
- leading the E-mail discussion list for TWO weeks during the
semester (one of which coincides with the week of the band's
presentation)
- logging THREE Moo sessions with your band
- producing ONE collectively produced version of Essay #3:
Fragments of a Student's Discourse
Presentations (15-20 minutes each) should primarily do three
things:
- present the current material in a way which furthers our
PROBLEM-SOLVING process
- present the class with some (possible or likely) concrete
INSTRUCTIONS for the projects
- present the material in a creative, entertaining, and
interesting way
