We must avoid understanding postmodernism in a reductive way, but we also must avoid dismissing it as a fad. It is, instead, a general cultural condition within which we must learn to live and work. There are both positive and negative aspects to this; we must learn to bring the positive into being.
Postmodernism can help explain such concepts as the rise
of contract over permanent labor, the growth of global markets and information networks, interdisciplinary teams in business and industry, among other things.
But we will gain productive and valued positions in the workplace only
if we begin to understand these cultural developments in new ways.
