2008OpenSkeffingtonOpening Session: A Wakeup Call Eight-thirty in the morning is early for many of us. But if you got to the Grand Ballroom at about 8:oo – 8:15 a.m., you were treated not only to an all brass jazz band, but to the sight of Charles Bazerman and Andrea Lunsford sharing a dance. He outlasted her by a song or two, dancing both on his own and with the band’s dancer. If you’d asked me ahead of time, I’d have thought trumpets would be a bit much at that hour, but they managed not to be. It’s hard to stay sleepy in the face of such enthusiasm. It’s not just that Bazerman was dancing, or that attendees were moved to bounce a little on the way to their seats. This was joy. Handkerchief-waving, hip-shaking joy. And darned if that joy didn’t infect even the sleepiest of caffeine-toting, non-morning person academics. It was an auspicious beginning. |
